A mother of three, Machesney started studying nursing after her last daughter finished high school, and says, "Ever since childhood, I have wanted to work in the healthcare field to make a difference in the lives of others, but life happens and my plans were put on hold." Machesney held onto her dream through years of working other jobs that gave her some flexibility to be as involved in her daughters’ lives as possible. Machesney obtained her bachelor’s from Pace this May, and in a few months, will start a program at the University of Hawaii where she will earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice within three years.  She will obtain her nurse practitioner credentials, studying adult geriatrics, and wants to focus on oncology. Machesney recalls a conversation she had while she was considering attending Pace University to get her bachelor’s.  She spoke with a couple she had befriended after selling a house to them.

“He is the chief financial officer of three women’s clinics, and she is a vice president in international banking.  When I found Pace’s nursing program and was thinking about it, I wanted their opinion. I asked, ‘Have you ever heard of Pace University in New York?’ They laughed because they had both graduated from Pace.  Given their incredible success, I decided it was the right place for me.” Machesney’s decision to attend Pace was without a doubt the right one; it opened many doors.  She met Professor Sharon Wexler, PhD, RN, sophomore year.

“I became her research assistant," he said. "We published a paper.  I’ve had the opportunity to present at national conferences.  I couldn’t have accomplished all this without Dr. Wexler.” Machesney’s hard work and Dr. Wexler’s mentorship have paid off: at the Lienhard School of Nursing pre-commencement award and recognition ceremony on May 18, she was honored with the Ruth K. Pell award, the 2015 American Nursing Association Future Leader award, and the Scholastic Achievement award.
