Parents, teachers and classmates packed into the school gym for the the spelling contest.

Having conquered words like "obsidian," "inquisitive" and "joust," the winning word was, surprisingly, "taught." The first-place winner was fourth-grader Kristian Howell. Third-grader Luis-Joshua Casenas took second place, and third place went to fourth-grader Collin Rice.

The spelling bee was the culminating event for the spelling bee enrichment class taught in the school's spring session.

Teachers Angela D. Monteleone and Melissa Magiet taught the class with fun word games and strategies. Students discovered the power of vocabulary by learning cool new words and tricks to become better spellers.

The enrichment class was a big success, and the spelling bee was a unique experience, according to those who attended.
