PELHAM, N.Y. Michael Recca graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 2006 and, six years later, said he is definitely excited to be joining the Pelham Board of Education.
The lifelong Pelham resident won election to the board in May along with Madeline Smith, and they will be officially inducted as members on July 10. They will be replacing former President Robert Eicher and Doug Hearle, neither of whom chose to run for re-election.
It is an exciting time for our district, with lots of very important issues coming up in the next few years, said Recca. I look forward to working with the board and the residents of Pelham.
The board will have to choose a new superintendent to replace the retiring Dennis Lauro and interim Charlie Wilson, work on keeping the 2013-2014 school budget under the New York State-mandated tax levy cap and negotiate with teachers on expiring contracts over the next school year. Although not yet officially board members, Recca and Smith have been allowed by the board to take part in closed-door, executive session board meetings since the election.
Recca believes he can handle the job because of his long involvement and depth of understanding of Pelham schools, commitment to the town and the villages, and knowledge and experience in budgetary matters.
He graduated from Fordham Universitys Gabelli School of Business, where he earned his degree in business administration and a concentration in finance. He now works in financial administration for the Westchester County Department of Social Services.
Ive learned a lot from current and past Pelham Board members and from Board members from other districts around Westchester County, said Recca. It is important to form a consensus of members of the board as well as members of the community.
