Kempton, 27, is the man behind Bergen Paranormal Investigative Services. An EMT with a criminal justice degree, he established his service five years ago.

Since then, he and his team have investigated more than 50 reports of unusual activity in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

They work for free. Mostly, they answer calls from homeowners.

Ninety percent of the time, Kempton said, he and his team find some explanation for seemingly odd phenomena, including poor electrical wiring and the unfamiliar noises of a new home.

“Particularly with the popularity of some TV shows,” he said, “people are more willing to jump on the idea it must be a ghost.”

In some instances, it becomes apparent to Kempton that drugs or some domestic issue is at work.

But the real fun comes when he encounters a truly unexplained phenomenon, as he did last week during a two-night investigation of the Hill View Manor, an abandoned 19th-century poorhouse in Pennsylvania.

“Both nights started out really quiet,” Kempton said. “Then, out of nowhere, at 12:30 a.m. the atmosphere changed. You just felt like you were being watched. Then things like pieces of flooring were being thrown.”

At one point, there was a crashing noise in the room where Kempton and his team had stored their equipment.

“We went in there,” he said, “and saw nothing had moved.”

Kempton always looks for multiple pieces of evidence.

“You get an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) on the digital recorder in conjunction with an EMF (electromagnetic field) spike on the mel meter and some sort of visual anomaly,” Kempton said.

“Say they’re all happening at the same time. That’s what you’re after,” he added. “One piece of evidence doesn’t stand by itself.”

The Bergen team’s job is to record and identify truly unexplained phenomena and then refer those homeowners to reputable spiritual cleansers, priests, and, in some cases, low-cost therapists.

Ultimately, Kempton hopes to prove or disprove at least one theory about ghosts.
