Mother, Son Charged With Vandalizing Veterans Memorial In Westchester

A pair of suspects are in custody after allegedly vandalizing Washington Park in Getty Square in Yonkers earlier this month.

According to police, on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 2, officers from the Yonkers Police Department were dispatched to Washington Park, where they discovered that the Veterans Memorial Monument had been desecrated with paint.

Members of the 4th Precinct and the Yonkers Police Department’s Intelligence Unit subsequently launched an investigation, that yielded information that an ATM machine at 47 S. Broadway was also vandalized with paint.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, investigating officers acted on information that was developed regarding a pair of suspects reportedly staying in the area of the Sharing Community Center on Hudson Street. According to police, while at that location, Jeanette Socorro Moore Aviles, 48, and her son Christopher Vargas, 26, were taken into custody.

Both are reportedly homeless and frequent the Sharing Community regularly. Both were arraigned on third-degree criminal mischief charges in Yonkers Criminal Court on Wednesday afternoon.
