The northbound crash occurred at around 12:20 p.m. at Route 35 (Exit 6) in Katonah, leading to the roadway's closure and hour-long delays stretching back miles for most of the afternoon.

Zhi R. Ding, 71, of Queens, used the median shoulder of the interstate to change the tire on his 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the help of his passenger, Xian Yansheng, 61, of Brooklyn, state police said.

A Honda Civic operated by Mark Manzi, 33, of Harrison left the roadway, then struck both Ding and the Jeep. The Grand Cherokee was then pushed into Yansheng.

Both Ding and Yansheng were transported to Westchester Medical Center. The injuries sustained by Ding are considered serious, police said.
