Three Teens Charged In Fatal Westchester Shooting

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three teens have been charged in connection with the shooting death Thursday in Greenburgh of 46-year-old town resident Joseph Smith III, said Greenburgh police.

Following an investigation into the shooting, detectives arrested Trevon Major, 16, of White Plains, with the shooting, said Lt. Kobie Powell. 

Major was charged with manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence, all felonies, Powell said.

His brother, Vance Major, 18, also of White Plains, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon possession and evidence tampering. 

The third man arrested, Timothy Whitney, 18, of Yonkers, was also charged with weapon possession and evidence tampering, he added.

First-responding officers discovered Smith in the six-floor stairwell of the seven-story apartment complex at 100 Manhattan Ave., with a gunshot wound to the chest. Greenburgh EMS personnel worked to revive Smith while transporting him to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Majors' live on the sixth floor of the building. Smith lived in the adjacent building of the complex, Powell said. 

During a search of the Majors' apartment, detectives recovered a gun, Powell added.

All three are being held at the Westchester County Jail.
