PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. Three men were charged Sunday after they allegedly tried to steal a 1994 Honda Accord from the Pelham Manor Shopping Centers Fairway Market and instead fled with some of the car's contents when the owner accosted them, Pelham Manor police said.
Bryan Griffin, 30, of 276 Chauncey St., Brooklyn; Raymond Johnson, 28, of 194 Ralph Ave., Brooklyn; and Bruce Darnel, 36, of 570 Summerfield Ave., Bridgeport, Conn., were charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony; and petty larceny and possession of burglar tools, both misdemeanors, Detective Timothy De Santola said.
The victim said that as he approached his vehicle, three men put his wood guitar back in it and fled on foot toward Boston Post Road. The vehicle had a broken drivers side window, a broken ignition and a damaged steering column, Pelham Manor police said.
Police searched the area and found three suspects walking southbound on McOwen Avenue toward Hollers Avenue in the Bronx. A chase began as the three headed through a yard at 3517 McOwen Place, police said. The three leaped over a wood fence and into a yard on Huguenot Street.
Officers saw Johnson drop a pair of blue pants and a pair of pliers, and Griffin dropped a black hat and sweatshirt and a red-handled hacksaw, as the two continued running through yards on Huguenot Street, police said.
They were apprehended by Pelham Manor Police Officers Andrew Leal and Christopher McCormack at Boston Post Road and Huguenot Street. Pelham Police Officer Joseph DiBenedetto apprehended the third suspect, Darnel. The New York Police Department assisted in the efforts.
A green jersey and a screwdriver also were found in a yard on Huguenot Street, police said.
Black sneakers, jeans, a Samsung Galaxy Sii Phone, a sweat jacket, other clothes and furs were also recovered, Pelham Manor police said.
