PELHAM, N.Y. -- The animal remains found in Pelham are of a dog that likely died of natural causes, the Westchester County Police Department said.
Pelham police notified the county Feb. 28 that a Pelham Department of Public Works employee who was blowing leaves on property near First Avenue and the Hutchinson River Parkway had found a black plastic garbage bag that had animal remains in it.
"The case that we have involves the remains of a single dog, very possibly a pit bull," said Kieran O'Leary of the Westchester County Police Department. "Nearby, not in the bag, there were also some skeletal remains that were determined to be from a possum. At this point, it appears that the dog in the bag died of natural causes and that someone simply dumped the remains in a wooded area rather than disposing of the animal more appropriately."
O'Leary said the county was called because of a case last year in which a Bronx veterinarian was charged with illegally dumping animal remains along the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison.
"We don't believe that this is connected to that, and we think this dog died much more recently," he said.
The investigation remains open.
