Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Barragan-Reyes, 22, of New Rochelle, was sentenced to between one and three years in prison after pleading guilty to felony counts of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and unlawfully fleeing from police in the crash that took the life of Shaquan Jackson.

A New Rochelle police officer was interviewing Barragan-Reyes’ girlfriend in front of her Fourth Street apartment on Oct. 6, 2013, shortly before noon, when he drove his Honda and made a threatening gesture toward her with Jackson in the front seat.

Police then entered into a high-speed chase with the defendant that saw him go through several red lights before hitting a tree and a retaining wall and flipping the Honda, ejecting both passengers onto Webster Avenue.

Jackson was found 29 feet in front of the car, while Barragan-Reyes was found nearly 90 feet away. According to police, Jackson was pronounced dead the next morning, while the defendant was sent to Sound Shore Hospital to recover. He was subsequently arrested by New Rochelle police.

Barragan-Reyes also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. He was additionally charged with speeding, harassment and unlawful possession of marijuana, all violations.
