The defendant, Joseph Graham, has been indicted on one count of manslaughter in the first degree, a class B felony, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony, in connection with the death of Clarence Vanhook, McCarty said.
Graham’s arrest came about after he and Vanhook became embroiled a physical confrontation in the vicinity of 5 S. Broadway in Yonkers on Sept. 12, at approximately 4:07 p.m., according to police.
During the incident, Graham stabbed Vanhook in the chest with a large knife, striking the victim in the heart, police said.
Vanhook was rushed to St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.
Shortly thereafter, Graham, who matched a description given by witnesses, was observed by members of the Yonkers Police Department walking northbound on North Broadway; after subsequent police investigation, he was taken into custody, police said.
The defendant has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His remand continues, with his next court date scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Graham faces a maximum of twenty-five years in state prison if convicted.
Assistant District Attorney James Bavero of the Superior Court Trials Division is prosecuting the case.
