The two-alarm fire started on the second floor before spreading to the two upper floors, according to Thomas F. Fitzpatrick, deputy chief of personnel for the Yonkers Fire Department.

A total of 10 companies and 40 firefighters had been on the scene early Sunday morning, Fitzpatrick said.

"Four firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital, but the injuries are believed to be minor," Fitzpatrick said.

Five families were being re-located by the Yonkers Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Red Cross. Two of those families are staying with family members, officials said. The Red Cross provided emergency relocation for the other three families.

"The Yonkers PAL opened up as a reception center for those who needed to stay there until arrangements were made for them to be re-located," said Red Cross voluntee, Carolyn Sherwin who was on the scene.

Fitzpatrick said that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
