YONKERS, N.Y. -- A 4-year-old Yonkers girl is in critical condition after accidentally shooting herself in the face late Monday night, according to officials.

The girl injured herself inside her family's Walnut Street apartment just after 10:30 p.m. A relative in the next room heard the shot fired while the girl's mother was outside talking to a friend, according to WABC.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from inside of the apartment. The origins of the weapon are still under investigation by authorities, Yonkers Police officials said.

The victim was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx and is still in critical condition as of the YPD's most recent report.
