On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Harbor Unit of the New Rochelle Police Department found a black plastic bag in the Sound that contained a decapitated goat and five decapitated chickens, believed to have drifted to the area from elsewhere.
The bag also contained money, food and a blue shirt that is being investigated by the SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit (HLE).
On Friday, Jenny Robison, a self-admitted New Rochelle “animal lover” who has two dogs, said that she couldn’t believe the reports when her husband brought it to her attention.
“I actually didn’t know about it until my husband told me about it on Wednesday. It’s horrible that someone would do that to innocent animals,” she said while walking the dogs on Fifth Avenue. “We’re supposed to protect the animals around us, not butcher them.”
According Ernest Lungaro, the unit director of the HLE, this is the third incident that the SPCA has investigated this summer. On July 21, the remains of a black bird wrapped in layers of red, white and black cloth were found in Wilson Woods in Mount Vernon, accompanied with written symbols believed to be associated to a black magic cult.
Marcos Quinones, an occult specialist that has assisted on more than 200 cases, said that the symbols were part of a “Palo Mayombe” ritual. It is unclear if the New Rochelle case is related to the Mount Vernon case.
“The remains of the bird found in Mount Vernon definitely involve a Palo Mayombe ritual. The white cloth contained the Palo Mayombe symbol of a circle intercepted by arrows,” he said in a statement. “This is not a good ritual, but is black magic conducted to produce a desire effect on a person or group of people.”
In addition to the lower Westchester investigations, several decapitated goats and the remains of multiple animals were found near Underhill Avenue in Yorktown by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection on Aug. 25.
Outside of Petco in Mount Vernon, Steve Geathers said that whomever is responsible for dismembering the animals ought to face consequences similar to those they would face if they committed the heinous acts to a fellow human.
“It’s horrendous what is happening, and scary to think these nuts are living nearby and doing this nearby,” he said. “I say that when they’re found we should lock them up and throw away the key.”
