MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Ronald Blackwood, 91, the fist black mayor in New York state, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, from complications from Parkinson's disease.

Blackwood, who was a native of Jamaica, served as mayor of Mount Vernon for 11 years beginning in 1985.

He is survived by his wife of over 38 years, Ann Griffin Blackwood; daughter, Helen M. Blackwood; brother, George Blackwood (Lorna); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Griffin Kelley and Jane O'Neill; brother-in-law, John Kelley; his long-term mentee Breon Clark; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

A service will be held at noon Thursday at Grace Baptist Church at 52 S. Sixth Ave., Mount Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations for the Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity, 612 N. Ridgewood Ave., Suite A, Edgewater, FL, 32132.
