Robert Simon, 85, Pelham Manor Attorney

PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. – Robert G. Simon, a resident of Pelham Manor since 1959, died Sept. 12. He was 85.

Simon was born Feb. 21, 1927, in New York City to Monroe and Claire Schifter Simon. He grew up in New Rochelle and graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1943. He attended Cornell University before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He served in the Philippines and then returned to Cornell, graduating in 1947. 

He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1950 and worked as a clerk for Gregory Noonan, a federal judge in the southern district of New York. He then became the legal advisor to "The Verdict Is Yours," the first courtroom TV series  

Simon later joined McCann Erickson as the director of business affairs and was a senior vice president before moving to the Interpublic Group of Companies legal department as chief broadcast attorney. 

During this time, he was active in the New York chapter of the National Television Academy, serving as president from 1981-82. He also served as a trustee of the National Academy.

Simon also was on the board of a number of organizations dealing with disabilities. He was the founding member of the board of the Pelham Guidance Council. After retiring from Interpublic, he served as an arbitrator in the New Rochelle small claims court and was a legal consultant to the Hemlock Society of New York.

Simon was a facilitator in the "Time Out, Talk it Out" anti-bullying program that took him to many middle schools throughout Westchester County.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma Plavnick Simon; a son, Mark, of New York City; a daughter, Susan, of Monterey County, Calif.; a grandson; a nephew and a niece.  

There will be a private memorial service at a future date. The family will receive friends at home from 4-8 p.m. Friday.
