PELHAM N.Y. – Margaret "Peggy" Elder Wines of Pelham died Nov. 17 at Cornell Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was 76.

Wines was born July 9, 1936, in the Bronx, N.Y., to Francis Xavier Elder and Gertrude Harran. She married Roger A. Wines on Feb. 14, 1959, in Wurzburg, Germany.

She received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University New York Hospital School of Nursing, a master's degree in psychiatric nursing from Hunter College and a Ph.D. in administration, policy and urban education from Fordham University's Graduate School of Education.

She nurtured the professional careers of thousands of nurses during the last 45 years, her family said. Under her leadership, the college provided nursing education to an upwardly mobile, committed and largely minority student population and enabled licensed practical nurses to receive associate's degrees in applied sciences and become registered nurses.

In 2003, Wines received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Cornell University New York Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. In 2004, a resolution passed by the New York State Senate and Assembly honored her 25 years of service as president of Helene Fuld College of Nursing in 2004.
