Wise Hardware Hoping for Some Snow to Fall Soon

PELHAM, N.Y. – When the pre-Halloween snowstorm struck Pelham, many residents believed they would be in for a long, difficult winter, including Bill Weinblatt, the owner of Wise Hardware.

That hasn't been the case so far, however, as the area hasn't seen another storm since then.

“No increase in shovel sales yet, waiting,” said Weinblatt. “It would be nice. It’d be great for business and make me happy.”

Weinblatt, who has owned the store for 28 years, said he usually sees a sales increase in December.

“The weather has not been conducive to people buying snow shovels or ice melter,” he said.

And don't expect snow this weekend. The National Weather Service is predicting it will hit 50 degrees on Friday and stay in the 40s, with some chilly nights, on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures Monday and Tuesday are expected to be in the mid 40s as well.

Even when the October snowstorm pummeled Pelham, the owner of Wise Hardware was unable to sell any shovels because he had not received his delivery.

Edith Parker, who was getting some shopping done at DeCicco’s Food Market, is hoping to go through winter without any snow.

“I’m happy there’s no snow. I don’t want to have to worry about cleaning it up. I have to shovel. The snow is bad, even just a little snow," she said. “Shoveling snow is not exactly my cup of tea. I’m hoping for a snowless winter.”

James Paul, a pharmacist at Klein Pharmacy, shares the same sentiment as Parker.

“If we get it, we get it,” said Paul. “I’ll stay in the house. I don’t shovel snow anymore. I have someone that comes and does our walkway and driveway.”

Suzie Coviello, who was picking up some things at the pharmacy, was quick to agree.

“I’d rather it be like this,” said Coviello. However she is ready. “I am prepared. I bought a new shovel.”

Coviello does not like the snow because she said she can't shovel or drive during it.

“I try, but I can’t,” she said of shoveling. “Snow… I’m scared to death of it.”

While a few residents want to see a winter without snow, Harry Engstrom cannot wait for the snowfalls to drop.

“Bring it on,” said the assistant court clerk. “I’m ready for the snow.”

For Wise Hardware’s sake, Weinblatt hopes to see the snow start falling soon.

“We are hoping for a storm once a week,” he said with a laugh. “That’d be great.”
