The event is organized by Rye artist Heather Patterson, who has held it at the Rye Playland Boardwalk for the past three years. When that venue became unavailable at the last minute this year, she was able to get approval to hold it at Rye Town Park. Artists who attended said that there was a pretty good turnout this year, despite rain on Saturday and some wind on Sunday.
Rachel Chalchinsky of Scarsdale was selling jewelry that she designed. A third-generation jewelry designer, she has spent more than 30 years in the jewelry business. Her specialty is gold-plated sterling silver, cubic zirconia pieces and semiprecious stones. She said that one of her most popular pieces is a necklace featuring the Hamsa, a symbol designed to ward off the "evil eye" in many cultures. She also has Stars of David and crosses.
"I try to have something for everybody," she said.
Nickola Walker was also showing and selling her homemade jewelry. Many of her pieces are sterling silver, brass, chain mail or leather and cowhide. Her signature piece is the cowhide necklace, which she first started making when attending classes at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn.
"I love leather, and I wanted to learn how to make pieces that resonate my taste," Walker said.
Siobhan Stanton of Hastings-on-Hudson specializes in digital photography, charcoal drawings and oil paintings. Many of her works are portraits of pets and children. She started doing portraits a couple years ago, when she was introduced to charcoal drawing in school and started drawing horses. She moved on to dogs and cats, then to portraits of people. She said that during the event, a lot of people have expressed interest in having her do personalized pet portraits for them.
Murjani Holmes came from Brooklyn to show her hand-painted picture frames, ring boxes, magnets and t-shirts. A lot of her colorful acrylic paintings are of nature subjects. A painter her whole life, she said that she jumps on the opportunity to participate in any festival she sees.
"This has been an awesome experience. We're by the beach, there's a great view, I have cool neighbors," she said of her booth at the Sound Shore Festival. "The vibe is good."
