Avoid “warm up thefts” by not leaving their cars unattended while defrosting the windows and running the heat in the morning, the department said in an alert.

Police noted that “it’s an invitation to thieves and even against the law. Give yourself some extra time and stay with your vehicle as it warms up.” The department added that residents should also “remember to check exhaust pipes for snow blockages, which can cause deadly gasses to backup in the vehicle’s cabin.”
