The Picture House in Pelham to Screen 'Purple Rain'

PELHAM, N.Y. -- A screening of Prince’s famous musical, "Purple Rain," will be offered to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at The Picture House.

The movie will be shown in digital projection, and the evening will include musical performances before and after the screening on the stage in the 1921 theater. The first performer will be a Prince impersonator doing a few of the rock and pop legend’s songs. The Stellar Wolfs, a local band, will play a short set after the show.

"Purple Rain" was a rock musical drama, released in 1984. It was written by William Blinn and Albert Magnoli, who also directed. The movie was a cult classic, which grossed more than $80 million in the box office. It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. An album of the same name was also released and sold more than 10 million copies in America, and 20 million worldwide. Two songs from the album – “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” – reached No. 1 on the charts, while “Purple Rain” went all the way to No. 2.

Tickets to the anniversary screening of "Purple Rain" will be $12 for general admission, $10 for students and seniors, and $6 or members of The Picture House. Tickets can be purchased online at or at the box office at 175 Wolfs Lane.
