"Men of the Cloth" is a portrait of three humble and accomplished Italian master tailors whose work exudes elegance and style. The film shows a window into the past, present, and future of custom tailoring, a craft whose roots are in the Italian Renaissance but whose branches extend from small towns in the Apennine Mountains of Italy and the outskirts of Palermo, Sicily, to New York’s Madison Avenue and the suburbs of Philadelphia.
Now in the twilight of their careers, Corvato, Checchino Fonticoli and Joe Centofanti have a passionate devotion to their Old World craft that’s akin to a religion. "Men of the Cloth" shows how the values embodied by these master tailors – pride, authenticity, and passion — exist in stark contrast to those embodied by technology and mass production.
After the film, John Calvelli, Picture House chair emeritus, will lead a discussion with Vasilopoulos, and Corvato.
Vasilopoulos is a Greek-American journalist whose articles have been published in The New York Times, Esquire, New Jersey Monthly and Time Out New York. She spent more than a decade as senior fashion editor at WWD Men’s. "Men of the Cloth" is her directorial debut.
Corvato creates custom-made clothing and presides over a small workroom on Madison Avenue, where artisans from six different countries stitch garments.
"Men of the Cloth" premiered at DOC NYC, the largest documentary film festival in America, and was also an official selection of the Hamptons Documentary Film Festival, the Montclair Film Festival and La Femme International Film Festival.
