PELHAM, N.Y. -- At Accents on Antiques in Pelham, customers know their money is being spent on a good cause.
The volunteer-run store, which opened in 1995, directly benefits Montefiore New Rochelle, formerly known as Sound Shore Medical Center.
Merchandise is acquired through donation and consignment, with dealer rental opportunities available. Since its opening, the shop has donated approximately $50,000 each year to the hospital.
A reception was held on Wednesday, June 25 by Montefiore Medical Center to commend the volunteers who work at the shop, and have helped support Montefiore since its acquisition of Sound Shore Medical Center last year.
Store manager Marie Cartelli responds to calls and goes to people's houses to look at the merchandise and make sure it matches the upscale quality of the store.
She pointed out the most valuable item in the store currently, which is a secretary desk from 1840, viewable from the shop's location on Wolfs Lane.
Angela Turko, the special projects manager of Montefiore New Rochelle who oversees the shop with Cartelli, says the money currently goes to Montefiore Hospital generally but will be designated to a specific area in time.
Susan Green-Lorenzen, former Mount Vernon resident and senior vice president of operations at Montefiore, said the company is well-aware of the good work the store has done over the past 20 years.
"People care about their local hospitals, and communities care about their local hospitals. This is a demonstration of communities coming together to support the hospital," she said.
Celeste Coughlin of White Plains and Ursula Huff were among the founding members of the store back in 1995.
"We began this store because we felt Pelham needed something different," said Coughlin , a 27-year Pelham resident. "We thought it would be important for the hospital to have a visible spot in the community instead of just the ER."
"It has been termed by many village mayors as the 'jewel' of Pelham, and it really is," she said.
She added that donations are always appreciated and needed.
Accents on Antiques is located at 125 Wolfs Lane.
