Pelham Woman and Others Respond to Airport Issue

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Daily Pelham posted a story earlier this week about JetBlue's starting international flights to the Bahamas from Westchester County Airport in November. Some county residents took to Facebook to voice both their pleasure and disapproval of this idea.

Nelly Mendez posted on The Daily Pelham's Facebook page that Westchester County residents have waited long enough for flights to other countries from the airport.

"The convenience of having international flights from our local airport was long awaited for," Mendez said on Facebook. "We deserve it."

But not everyone is thrilled at the prospect of jetting off to sunny beaches from Westchester County Airport. The Daily White Plains reader Pat Suriano wrote on that publication's Facebook page that the international flights should be left to the larger airports such as JFK and LaGuardia.

"As a Westchester native, I don't think this would be a good idea," Suriano said. "This is what we have NYC airports for."

One reader commented directly on the original story. Reader Kman said that people should not complain about the flights because the airport still generates most of its business from private travel.

"Only five percent of the airport's traffic is from airlines," Kman said. "The rest is all private aviation."

Kman also had words for county residents who live near the airport and might be unhappy with it.

"And for the people who live near the airport and complain all the time, why do you live near an airport then?" Kman said.
