PELHAM, N.Y. During its Monday night meeting, the Pelham Town Board discussed the redesign of the town courtroom and commended the Pelham Police Department for arresting the alleged Sound Shore robbery suspect.
The courtroom is being redesigned due to safety purposes.
Town Supervisor Peter DiPaola said that a suspect approached the judge in a menacing fashion in traffic court for an $85 ticket, which prompted the town board to look at options to keep the room safer.
Were looking to redesign it and make it more efficient. Bring a lot of equipment there. Have it locked up. Weve already purchased the equipment, but we are working on the redesign of it, DiPaola said.
However, they ran into a problem last week when they learned that New York State would be taking away $65,000 due to an incorrect 2011 mortgage tax allocation.
The state screwed up last year, said DiPaola. They allocated the mortgage tax money incorrectly and decided to correct it this year on us. So they took $65,000 away from us that we were entitled to this year because they screwed up last year.
The redesign of the courtroom will now have to wait because of the lack of funds.
When speaking of the arrest, DiPaola said he was very proud and that he wanted the police department to know that the town appreciated the apprehension of the suspect.
Its simply good police work, said DiPaola of the April 26 arrest. I know everyone expects it to be done immediately, but I think they did it in a timely fashion and they did a great job. The minute I heard about it, I shot off a letter of commendation to the chief and I asked him to share it with his men.
