Pelham Residents Unafraid of Friday the 13th

PELHAM, N.Y. – What is friggatriskaidekaphobia? It’s the fear of Friday the 13th. While residents of Pelham seem unafraid of today’s date, they certainly have other superstitions.

“I never walk under a ladder and I feel nervous if a black cat walks into my path, especially on Friday the 13th,” said Michelle White.

White admitted that she “sometimes knocks on wood,” because she just can’t help it, but the M.A.D café customer was quick to point out that you should take care of your mirrors.

“Don’t break any mirrors or anything,” White said. “Otherwise, you’re in for seven years of bad luck.”

Dean Vacchio, a DeCicco’s Food Market employee, on the other hand, has never believed in Friday the 13th or any other superstitions.

“Not really, I don’t follow it,” Vacchio said. “Just the way it is."

Kit Potrafke, owner of Timeless Treasures, was curious about the superstition behind a particular jewel.

“Why are opals considered to be unlucky?” Potrafke wondered. “That’s a superstition, I think.”

A superstition that Potrafke does believe in is thanks to her former cleaning lady.

“I had a cleaning lady once from Nicaragua. She told me that it is very unlucky to ever put your shoes on a table. I don’t know why, but she scared me, and I never do that,” Potrafke said with laughter.
