Pelham Residents Ready For Relaxing Fourth Of July

PELHAM, N.Y. – Many Pelham residents enjoy the Fourth of July holiday by traveling, but with the holiday falling in the middle of the week, those plans have been erased and replaced with barbecues at home.

“It’d be ideal if you could get like a Monday or a Tuesday off and you can give yourself a nice solid holiday, but I think for most people that’d be hard to get two days,” said Lee Baynon while shopping with her son at DeCicco’s.

She said the Fourth of July being on a Wednesday is tough, but it is usually worse on a weekend because her husband’s birthday is two days before.

“Usually nobody’s around – they’re gone for the Fourth of July,” Baynon said. “You can’t find anybody and as the children get older, they make plans for the Fourth of July, so they’re gone.”

Baynon planned on having a simple barbecue with family and neighbors.

“Just throw some burgers on; you don’t want to work so hard either because it gets to be not fun when you start working too hard,” she said.

For others, the day of the holiday did not matter, only the date.

“It doesn't make any difference – it’s still the Fourth of July,” said Jimmy Rose, of New Rochelle, who planned on relaxing.

Barbara Haggerty was excited about having a break from work.

“I’m going to sit in front of my television set knitting and watching old movies,” Haggerty said. “Hopefully, they’ll have The Patriot on.”

Even though the holiday is during the middle of the week, Haggerty did not mind.

“I work all week, so it’s nice to have a day to just do what I want,” said the lifelong Pelham resident.
