PELHAM, N.Y. Concerned Pelham residents Kristin Austin and Janine Yorio have started a neighborhood watch group in light of the recent armed robberies near the train station. The group, which is called Pelham CrimeStoppers, was formed after a heavily attended community meeting at Yorios house on Feb. 2.
Safety tips were discussed at the meeting, which was also attended by Pelham Police Chief Joe Benefico and Town Supervisor Peter DiPaola.
Austin put together Pelham CrimeStoppers as a Facebook Group after the meeting in order for people to communicate, discuss issues, and offer safety tips, she said.
The goal of the 122 member group is to bring the Pelham citizens together to address the recent crime, including armed robbery and burglary, according to Austin.
The group is still working on their next step, but Austin said that she is hoping to have another meeting this weekend or early next weekend to push the process in the right direction. She is thrilled with the group and how well the Pelham community has responded.
I have been amazed how quickly our community has been able to come together, said Austin.
She also urged those Pelham citizens who are not on Facebook to sign up for the towns alert system. You can either sign up at www.pelhamgov.com or email her directly at firstname.lastname@example.org .
