Pelham Resident Participating In Great Bike Giveaway

PELHAM, N.Y. -- Because 7-year old Patrick Carney, grandson of Pelham’s Lucy and John Carney, has Cerebral Palsy, he cannot ride a bike on his own.

Pelham residents Lucy and John Carney are asking for resident to help their grandson Patrick receive a special bike by taking a moment and voting for him.

Thanks to the Great Bike Giveaway, he has a chance to win a Duet Wheelchair Tandem bike so he can enjoy family bike rides. Patrick, who is currently in 8th place, needs enough votes and donations to win the bike.

John and Lucy Carney have lived in Pelham for almost 30 years. Patrick’s dad, Mike, a graduate of Pelham Memorial High School lives in Louisiana with his wife Genevieve and Patrick’s two younger siblings. They said having a child with a disability makes it difficult to do many of the recreational activities they like to do, like taking family bike rides on the bike paths near their home.

"If we had the duet bicycle wheelchair combination we could take rides together as a family," said Patrick's parents.

The Great Bike Giveaway provides specialized adaptive bikes to children with special needs. The program was started in 2012 and has grown each year. In 2016 they hope to give away 600 adaptive bikes.
