The Fulton Avenue Drawbridge has been closed until further notice for emergency repairs, said a press release from Donna Greene, the Westchester County Deputy Communications Director.
Tuesday night, the bridge became stuck at a 15-degree angle. Coast Guard regulations require that the waterway be kept accessible for maritime traffic at all times, Greene said. Therefore, the bridge will be kept up and traffic detoured.
The bridge, which is between Secor Lane and Edison Avenue in Mount Vernon and Pelham Manor, connects Mount Vernon to Route 1 in addition to the areas major retail corridor, and has failed numerous times in the past, including for as long as six months, Greene said.
The detour route uses Pelham Parkway to Boston Post Road to Provost Avenue to South Third Avenue to South Columbus Avenue to South Fulton Avenue.
For additional information, people are asked to call the Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportations Traffic Division at (914) 995-2555.
