Pelham DeCicco's Shoppers Happy With Renovations

PELHAM, N.Y. – DeCicco’s Food Market in Pelham underwent major interior renovations in March, including replacing the wood floor with tiles and the old off-white beige shelves with dark copper ones, to “upgrade for the customers.” Shoppers certainly seem to appreciate the changes to the 28-year-old store .

“I like how it’s more spacious,” said Denise Boyle-Quatroni on The Daily Pelham Facebook page . “They did a good job replacing the floor,” while Michelle Parella Boyle added “the floor looks great.”

Some Pelham residents pointed to the vegetable and fruit section renovation as their favorite renovation.

“It’s just easier to get to,” said 17-year Pelham resident Laura Johnson. “You don’t have to go all the way around. There’s a middle part you can go through.”

The assistant court clerk said that the store “looks good” and likes how it now appears “upscale.”

The renovations, which will total roughly $500,000 to $600,000, according to DeCicco’s founder, John DeCicco Sr., also include expanding the seafood department, improving the registers and relocating the bakery to the front of the store while replacing it with a cheese counter and beer growlers. Store manager Angelo Lucareli said they are 50 percent done with the re-design.

DeCicco’s shopper, Sherry Webster, thought “they did a great job” and added that she appreciates the “great customer service, especially the deli.”

Lucareli, who began working at the popular food market as a 16-year-old when it first opened, said that the customers have “welcomed the change” and that there has been “a lot of positive reaction.”

“A lot of people like it,” Lucareli said. “As a matter of fact, what’s really amazing is that more and more people are more patient about it. Usually when people see stuff upside down, they get upset. It’s more for the benefit of themselves because the store needed an upgrade. Some of the stuff in the store you’re dating back to 1985.”
