PELHAM, N.Y. Edward Kalenderav is an important part of back-to-school preparations for Pelham parents and students.
As parents and children prepare for Wednesday's return to school next Wednesday a fresh haircut is usually on the list of things to do. Kalenderav, owner of Exclusive Hair Studio at 137 Wolfs Lane, said he sees more customers coming in this time of the year for haircuts. Kalenderav, a native of Moscow who commutes to Pelham from Rego Park in Queens, has operated Exclusive Hair Studio for five years he says, but he's been a barber for 40. Johnny Akilov, another barber at the shop, said boy's haircuts go for $16. Looking on while Kalenderav cuts a customer's hair, Akilov commented on his speed.
"Other barbers are fast," he said. "But they're usually not careful." Kalenderav has also devised a plan for younger customers: the boy's chair is set in front of a TV set that plays cartoons.
"Their eyes are glued to the TV," Akilov said. "They watch. One, two three.. I make haircut." Kalenderav has a list of popular haircuts that clients can choose from. "Young kids want number eight," he said. "Number four with a flip, also very popular now." Exclusive Hair Studio is usually busiest on the weekends and is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Walk-ins are welcome. Kalenderav is currently looking for beauticians, manicurists and wax professionals with existing customers to rent chairs at the shop. He's hoping to expand services to women's cuts and services. Customers are his top priority he said, describing an elderly customer whose home he visits to cut hair.
Special for the customer," he said. "Everything."
