Pelham Art Center "Thrilled" About Drum Circle

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Pelham Art Center is “thrilled” to be offering a free drum circle event given by Damon Jackson on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Executive Director Lynn Honeysett said she had seen Jackson perform before at an event in New Rochelle and was impressed with his ability to get everyone involved.

“He’ll have one part of the room play something and then the other part of the room do another rhythm and what happens is there’s this kind of communal rhythm-making,” she said. “Everyone sort of gets into it and it’s very exciting. It just takes over the room.”

Honeysett said the event will be a “nice community engagement.” At the start of the event, Jackson will bring out drums and other instruments to get people involved. Once the rhythm picks up, some people should start to get up and dance, she said.

"Damon brings out all of these drums and other instruments,” she said. “So people pick up the drum and start kind of experimenting with it."

The drum circle “is a rhythm-based event where a diverse group of individuals and instruments are gathered for the common purpose of empowering a community with creative self-expression in a group music-making experience,” according to a Pelham Art Center press release.

Jackson’s organization is called A.L.I.R.A.M. - A Lesson in Rhythm and Melody. He has performed throughout Westchester and is an active member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild.
