NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Following a maintenance issue that forced the closure of the New Rochelle YMCA pool over the weekend, it remains closed on Monday as officials deal with the problem.

Routine maintenance at the pool led to an issue that forced the closure of the pool on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, officials announced that the pool will remain closed until the maintenance problem is handled.

YMCA officials said that the problem was encountered while cleaning the hair and lint strainer, which is now unable to close, meaning the pool filter cannot be turned on temporarily. With the pool filter off, there is no filtration or circulation of pool water.

A timetable for the re-opening of the pool has not been announced.

“We have no choice but to close the pool until the strainer can be fixed or replaced,” officials stated. “We are working on opening back up as soon as we can, but for the meantime, all pool activities are suspended.”

Swim lessons will resume when the problem is rectified, officials said, and the session will be extended to make up for any missed classes.

Officials had to close down the pool for more than a year in 2014, following a routine inspection that determined there was extensive damage to the overhead drop ceiling above the pool. After a complete overhaul and series of fundraisers, the pool was once again opened to the public in March last year.
