Longtime Pelham Resident Talks Trash

PELHAM, N.Y. – Michelle Boyle used to have a family of six in her home and accumulated all the trash that came along with it. Though she only lives with her husband now, she said she still is not pleased with the trash and recycling pickup schedules in Pelham.

The village has a contract with AAA Carting and Rubbish Removal to pick up the garbage. Boyle said that workers pick up regular bagged garbage twice a week but only pick up recyclables and larger trash every other week.

“It’s gotten to the point where people have to store all this stuff in their house,” Boyle said.

The 34-year Pelham resident sometimes gets confused as to which items, trash or recyclables, will be picked up on a particular day and sometimes has to wait another two weeks to have them removed. She said the accumulation of trash outside of homes could also affect the real estate market in Pelham.

“If I was going to buy a house in the heights and it’s over a million dollars, I wouldn’t want to have trash all over,” Boyle said.

The Sparks Avenue resident did credit the village for starting to pick up the trash and recyclables earlier in the day so that the materials do not sit outside for hours.

Robert Yamuder, village administrator, said the village’s contract with AAA Carting and Rubbish Removal specifies the pickup schedule for regular garbage, though it could change in the future.

“I’ve been talking to the mayor and board about possibly changing the schedule to less frequent pickups,” Yamuder said.

He added that the board could possibly save money by amending the schedule but added that nothing has been decided yet. The schedule is negotiated as needed.

Boyle said that if the village does eventually go through with those changes, then the reaction will be negative.

“It’s going to be a problem,” Boyle said. “People are not going to like that.”
