WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - As former Westchester County Police Commissioner George Longworth rides off into the sunset following his retirement after 35 years in law enforcement, new County Executive George Latimer has tabbed an even more experienced civil servant to bridge the gap to his replacement.

The Westchester County Police Department announced that Chief Inspector Martin McGlynn has been named as the acting police commissioner, overseeing the department until a permanent commissioner is named “in the near future.”

The appointment comes on the same day that Longworth’s retirement became official as he prepares to return to practicing law following a law enforcement career that spanned nearly four decades.

McGlynn is a 42-year veteran, having started his career in January 1976 as a member of the Westchester County Sheriff’s Department, which merged to form the current department with Parkway Police three years later.

“Our acting commissioner has basically held every rank and done every job there is in the place, so we won’t list them all,” officials said when announcing the appointment. “Suffice to say he is an extremely accomplished professional, and we are in good hands indeed.”
