Westchester District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced on Wednesday that Mount Vernon resident Sande Steelberg, 51, has been arraigned on a felony count of second-degree grand larceny for allegedly stealing $144,431.68 from her employer, Mount Vernon-based SECS, Inc. while she was the head bookkeeper.
According to the felony complaint, over the span of 16 months, Steelberg stole the money by writing 95 checks over a span of 16 months made payable to herself between June 25, 2014 and Oct. 27, 2015 from the company. Scarpino noted that Steelberg also “failed to record a majority of those checks in the company’s check register.”
Steelberg was arrested on Aug. 31 last year, following the issuance of a warrant for her arrest when she failed to surrender in June. She was released on her own recognizance after pleading not guilty to the charge. She is due back in court on in Mount Vernon on April 24 to answer the charge, where she will face a maximum of 15 years in state prison.
