Disturbed Man With Knife Subdued by Pelham Police

PELHAM, N.Y. – Pelham police subdued an emotionally disturbed man Monday afternoon after he was apprehended brandishing a knife.

Police arrived at the rear yard of the Fifth Avenue building just before 3:30 p.m. and saw the man screaming while clutching a knife. A resident told police she could see the man in the yard from her second floor window stabbing the rear doors and window frames of the building.

According to the police report, the man yelled, "There is going to be a police shooting tonight!"

Officers went into the yard and ordered the man down to the ground. They handcuffed him and searched him as safety precautions. Police found two kitchen knives on the ground next to the man.

The man asked police to secure his apartment and an officer went inside to lock the window and door and turn off the radio. He found several bottles of prescription pills, including one with medication for schizophrenia, on a table while inside the apartment.

Medical personnel transported the man to the emergency room at The Mount Vernon Hospital for further evaluation.
