Two Hudson Valley Fire Departments Get Nearly 250K In Federal Grants

The Milan Volunteer Fire Department and the Village of Pelham Fire Department each received federal funding through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Milan will receive $130,952 to purchase 20 new self-contained breathing apparatus units while Pelham will receive $101,905 to purchase a new rescue vehicle.

Mark Sardaro, Milan Volunteer Fire Department Chief, said their breathing apparatus units were no longer adequate and that one of the air packs recently failed at a structure fire.

"This could not have come at a more critical time," said Sardaro. "The tax caps and financial situation of the communities we protect would have made replacing the packs nearly impossible.

Michael Volpe, Mayor of Pelham, said they will use the funding to replace Rescue 45, a 21-year old emergency vehicle.
