PELHAM, N.Y. The Pelham School District scored far above the county and state averages on the math and English Language Arts (ELA) exams students in grades three through eight took in May, according to results released Tuesday by the State Education Department.
Pelham schools had 85.8 percent of students in those grades at or above the proficiency standard in math, compared to the state average of 63.3 percent. Students in the district reached or exceeded the standard in ELA at an 82 percent rate, compared to a 52.8 percent state average.
Westchester County had 70.1 percent of students meet or exceed the average in Math and 64 percent do the same in ELA.
Christine Farahat runs Gracious Living Design Studio on Fifth Avenue and has a daughter starting fourth grade and a son starting second grade at Hutchinson Elementary School. Farahat said she does not follow the scores that closely, but knows the strong numbers reflect the quality of education in Pelham.
"That's why we moved here," Farahat said. "We knew that the schools here are top ranked in the country. It's definitely important to us."
The Siwanoy School had no students in grades three through five score at level one, which is the lowest possible rating, in both math and ELA. All fourth graders at the Siwanoy School scored at levels three and four in math.
A student at level three meets the proficiency standard, while a level four student exceeds it.
All students in grades three, four and five at the Colonial School scored at levels two, three and four in ELA.
