Pelham Residents Enjoy Swing Music at Sunset

PELHAM, N.Y. – New Rochelle resident Linda Downes traveled to Pelham Tuesday night to listen to the sounds of the Virgil Scott Swing Band as part of Pelham’s Summer Concert Series.

"I think it's absolutely fantastic and uplifting," Downes said. "It's not the music of my specific era but during the current world situation it's one of the most uplifting things to do in the summertime."

Residents of Pelham and surrounding communities set up lawn chairs on the grass near the gazebo at the Town House Park to listen to the band. The predominantly older crowd relaxed as the sun set in the sky above them.

Downes learned of the show from a friend who used to live in Pelham and now lives in New Rochelle. Downes had been sitting at home when she remembered the concert and decided to attend the show, which she described as subdued and relaxing.

Joe and Bella Daleo have journeyed from the Bronx for the past five years to attend the summer concert series in Pelham. Their friends from Pelham originally told them about the show years ago and the elderly couple has no plans to miss any concerts this year.

"Every Monday we'll be here," Bella Daleo said.

The concerts in the series this year typically occur on Mondays from June 27 to September 5, however the Fourth of July holiday pushed this week's show to Tuesday.

Regardless of the day of the week, Downes was happy to simply sit on a bench and let the music soothe her.

"People need something to lift them," Downes said.
