PELHAM, N.Y. - Democratic town justice candidate Mercedes Maldonado was the 200th person to like The Daily Pelham on Facebook . The mother of three has lived in Pelham for almost eight years.Maldonado is running against fellow Democrat George Bischof and Republican candidate John De Chiaro. She also opposes incumbent town justice, Republican Stephen Huff. The candidate has a son at Pelham Middle School and two daughters at Hutchinson Elementary School. Maldonado said her experience as a mother of three would be helpful if she were elected to office."I just feel it connects me more to what is important to people and puts me more in touch to what people are concerned about," Maldonado said.Maldonado said she had heard that the middle school was a wonderful place. Now that she has a son there, those words have concretized for her."It's a joy to come home to a son who is motivated to learn and who talks about how he loves school," Maldonado said. The candidate said people should make it a priority come out to vote on Nov. 8 in the election and that the idea of voting on party lines should be dismissed because "the voters should judge for themselves who are the best candidates."The co-chair of the Democratic Party in Pelham asked Maldonado to run for office. She hopes to bring more awareness to people in Pelham about the courts."I find it odd that no one knows what goes on in the town courts," Maldonado said. "It's as if nothing of any consequence happens in the court. Intuitively, we know that can't be the case."Whether Pelham elects her to office or not, the mother of three will always have a particular skill."I have that classic multitasking skill that all working moms have honed from having 10 balls up in the air at one time," Maldonado said.
