PELHAM, N.Y. - Jacqlyn Marcello has not worked at Tropical Lights Tanning II on Fifth Avenue in Pelham for a great length of time but she has already come to know her customers during her brief employment period.
"I've only been here for a month and I've already developed relationships with our customers," Marcello said.
Marcello is one of the employees at the tanning salon opened by Paul DiMarco in 2000. His brother opened the first location in New Rochelle in 1997 and its popularity led to the second store.
"We started this place because our New Rochelle store was too busy," DiMarco said. "This would take some of the extra load."
DiMarco, who still lives in New Rochelle, said the store services customers from Pelham, New Rochelle, Eastchester and even the Bronx. The salon offers different packages from single tanning sessions to full year memberships. The owner said the latter is the more popular option.
"Most people buy packages," DiMarco said. "There's really no need to just tan once."
The summer presents people with the opportunity to go to the beach and bask in the sunshine. But DiMarco said shops like Tropical Lights Tanning II still maintain their business because many people who work cannot or do not go to the beach. Instead, they use the booths at tanning salons after work.
Marcello said that customers receive quality treatment regardless of the reasons they come through the door.
"We're friendly and we're very helpful," Marcello said.
