On Friday afternoon, when students are dismissed early following Regents exams, faculty and staff will participate in an active shooter drill coordinated by the New Rochelle High School Safety team members Scott Rubin, Steve Newman and Bruce Daniele, the district’s director of security.
Prior to the 1:30 p.m. drill, the faculty will meet with police officials in the auditorium, where participating officers will explain the drill’s scenario. They will then be split into two groups, with the same scenario being played out twice. Following the drills, there will be a debriefing session.
According to Daniele, neighbors may hear what sounds like gunshots being fired, but stressed that police will only be using blank ammunition and there is no safety concern.
School officials noted that a recent Government Accountability Office survey found that nearly two-thirds of all schools in the country hold similar drills in an effort to educate teachers and students about how to react in the event of an armed intruder entering the school.
“We want to let our high school neighbors know this will be taking place on Friday and they should not be alarmed,” Daniele said. “Our intent is to provide faculty and staff with additional training to ensure their readiness, if we ever have to deal with this situation.
“Safety remains the district’s first priority. Being prepared for all possible situations such as this, helps to ensure everyone remains safe.”
