PELHAM, N.Y. Dennis Campo runs Wisdom Way Martial Arts on Wolfs Lane. He is just the third fighter in history to earn black belts under both heavyweight champion Joe Lewis and middleweight champion Bill Wallace.
Question: What is your favorite thing about Pelham?
Answer: The schools. They're just real good schools. They've got great teachers, great programs and they're pushing our kids to study hard. I see the difference from our previous town.
Q: Do you have a particularly fond memory of your time in Pelham?
A: The Halloween parades. I enjoy marching with my kids. I get dressed up in costume with them too. (I've been) Shrek, Karate Master, that guy from Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Those have been my favorites. Oh, and Sponge Bob. And Chick Magnet. It's been different every year.
Q: Do you have a favorite place to go in town?
A: Rockwell's. The food is great. The service is real good too. (My favorite dish is) the veggie burger.
Q: What is your favorite sport other than martial arts?
A: I'm not a sports fan. I'm a fight fan, not a sports fan. I don't know if bowling's a sport, but I like bowling. I'm not a spectator, I'm a participant. But I'll watch fighting. I watch every boxing match that's on HBO and Showtime. I watch every MMA match, every UFC card that's on Showtime.
Q: Do you think you'll ever leave Pelham?
A: I'll be here for at least the next 10 years. I think eventually I'll retire someplace. My family's in Binghamton, so maybe I'll retire up that way. But for the foreseeable future, I'll be here.
