WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- As CEO of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, Mary Beth Walsh has seen the hospital change along with the way it treats its patients.

"People here with a stroke, if you want just an average, are here about 22, 23 days," Walsh told Daily Voice. For other conditions, some patients might only stay at Burke for a few days when thirty years ago, in Walsh's estimation, the stay may have been several weeks.

Unlike a typical hospital, Burke breaks its patients into specific programs to ensure they receive the best possible care.

"We have the luxury of provided what I call diagnostic specific treatment units," Walsh said. "If you were in a much less populated place and you had one hospital, you might have 12 beds that you set aside for rehabilitation."

Walsh says that model creates an environment where a hip fracture patient might be stuck next to a stroke patient. By comparison, Burke breaks its 150 bed facility down to specific programs for specific impairments.

In January of this year, Burke aligned itself with the Montefiore Medical Group.
