Inspired by his childhood affinity for his hometown baseball team, longtime Mount Vernon resident Robert Vazquez penned and published his first children’s book, which is available at Barnes and Noble.

Vazquez said that “Next Stop, Yankee Stadium” is a story about “bonds, appreciating history and values and enjoying the moment.” It is loosely based on his childhood and his appreciation of visits to The Cathedral of Baseball.

“I look around at our youth and I see kids who are buried in their devices and experiencing the world through a screen,” he added. “The book talks about a time when we didn’t have distractions and we looked forward to getting out of the confines of our block to experience other parts of the city.”

During his youth, Vazquez said he was able to connect with baseball and the Yankees through the stories of an elderly man who had experienced some of New York’s greatest players.

“His wife would wheel him outside at 1 p.m. every summer morning and I would sit with him for hours talking baseball. I remember he couldn’t move much because of his condition, but he would light up when he was talking about games that he witnessed at the stadium,” he said. “I had a front row seat to history with a man who witnessed Ruth and Gehrig play.

“I saw his pride and his respect for the team and I learned the value of the Yankee tradition early on. The Yankees represent something more to me as an adult, as a person involved with business. There is a certain standard that is expected of you when you were those pinstripes.”

“Next Stop, Yankee Stadium,” is just the beginning for Vazquez, who is diligently working to publish his second story, “Christian’s Journey,” the story of a child with cancer, based on his experiences volunteering on the committee for the Cristian Rivera Foundation, where they attempt to find a cure for a rare form of brain cancer.

“As a child, I spent a lot of time observing and I realized that I had this ability to express myself really well through writing. I was able to paint a picture with words and it’s a hobby I have enjoyed since,” Vazquez said. “My focus in life is to connect with our youth in a positive manner and try to share my journey to inspire with a young mind.”
