Pelham Offers Spring Recreation Activities

PELHAM, N.Y. – Winter-weary Pelham children and adults who are dreaming of spring can look forward to a host of programs to sign up for and sports to play from the town recreation department. Here is a list of some of the offerings you can sign up for now:

Beginner and Advanced Ballroom Dancing: Children grades four through seven can learn the Merengue, Foxtrot, Salsa and Swing dancing on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 6:45 p.m. March through April at Colonial Elementary School, 315 Highbrook Ave. The fee is $150. Director Jacqueline Soccodato has 14 years of training in ballet, tap, toe, jazz and acrobatics. She is also a fifth grade teacher at Hutchinson Elementary School. 

Rugby Flag & Tackle: Children in grades two through nine can play flag or tackle rugby. Flag rugby will be held from April 1 to June 8 Mondays and Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for grades two through five and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for grades six through nine. Tackle rugby practices will be held Monday and Fridays for grades six through nine from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tackle games will be played Sunday afternoons starting April 14 and ending June 22. The fee is $175 for flag rugby, $200 for flag and tackle rugby.

American Goju Karate Association Tiny Tigers: This spring, preschool children ages 3 to 4 can learn karate at Richard J. Daronco Town House, 20 Fifth Ave., on Tuesdays from March 5 to May 7. Class times are 1 to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 2 p.m. The fee is $150. The instructor is Sensei Bob Chillemi, a fifth degree black belt.

Pelham Little League: Little League is offered to all Pelham children ages 5 to 15. The fee is $100. Contact John Nesi, Little League president, at (914) 738-7555 for more information. Minors and Majors drafts begin March 19 for boys and March 20 for girls. Practices and games are held at various fields around Pelham. Late registration will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 26 at the Little League Office, 121 B Fifth Ave. next to Pelham Bakery and one flight down.

Pelham Recreation Spring Soccer: Programs will be available for grade two, grades three and four, grades five and six, and grades seven through 10. The program will consist of mid-to-late afternoon Saturday practices followed immediately by a game. Schedules do not conflict with other spring sports. For more information, contact Recreation Soccer Commissioner Dennis Roche at 914-738-3749. Practices are held on fields around Pelham. Exact dates are to be announced.

Chess: Eight-week introductory programs are for children in kindergarten through eighth grade at Richard J. Daronco Town House, 20 Fifth Ave., every Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.. The fee is $100.

Theatre Arts: This program is for girls and boys ages 6 and up in Pelham. Drama activities are held at Richard J. Daronco Town House on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. The fee is $140 for eight weeks. Contact 914-738-0153 for Spring starting dates and more information.

Spring Break Clinics: Spring Break is April 26-29. Basketball clinic, all sports clinic, soccer clinic and lacrosse clinics will take place at Pelham Middle School Gym, Prospect Hill, Hutchinson, Ingalls and Glover Field. All clinics are offered for Pelham children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Fees are to-be-announced.

Men’s Softball League: The season begins the last week of April and ends the first week of August. Games are played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Glover Field. The organizational meeting is on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guild room at the Richard J. Daronco Town House, 20 Fifth Ave. The fee is $900 plus a $150 forfeit fee.

Women’s Softball League: The season begins the last week of May and ends the second week of August. Games are scheduled Mondays through Thursdays, either at Glover, Ingalls or Eastchester fields from 6:30 to 9 p.m. An organizational meeting will be held Monday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Pelham Town Hall, 34 Fifth Ave. The fee is $400 plus a $100 forfeit fee.

Zumba Plus: The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves for a one-of-a-kind fitness program. This program is ongoing from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Instructor Nora Montoya is a certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor. The fee is $120 for 10 sessions. Classes are held at Prospect Hill Elementary School, 1000 Washington Ave.

FIT: A work-at-your-own-pace workout class in a small group setting is ongoing. The fee is $216 for 18 classes led by Angela Manning at Colonial Gym.

The Pelham Recreation Department offices are located at 20 Fifth Ave. Sign up during office hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to  5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. All programs must be registered for in person. Proof of age and residency are required for all programs. Please have the exact fee – check or money order – payable to Pelham Recreation.
