PELHAM, N.Y. Renovations to the 28-year-old DeCiccos Family Market are almost complete, according to the supermarket's founder, John DeCicco Sr., who was beaming with excitement as he looked at the new location of the bakery.
"I think its beautiful great location, really convenient for the customers, DeCicco said of the bakerys move from the back of the store to the front. "Theyre waiting on line, maybe grab a cup of coffee or a piece of cake. Its very tempting."
DeCicco is glad about the bakerys move to the front because everyone sees it, everyone notices now, he said. The cakes, cookies and other treats replace the drugs and baby section that was previously located there.
Pelham resident Julianna DiPaola was getting some shopping done Thursday and remarked to her friend how great the bakery, which now has a marble countertop, looked in addition to the rest of the store.
I love how they made the aisles wider too, she said. It looks beautiful. They did a really good job.
DiPaola said that it is the same great supermarket she has been coming to for years and that she loves it there.
Pelham residents have appreciated the major interior renovations to the supermarket since March, which has included replacing the old wood floor and off-white beige shelves with tiles and dark copper shelves, respectively, plus expanding the seafood department and redesigning the produce section.
DeCicco said that the moves totaled roughly $500,000 to $600,000, but he is very happy because the customers are happy.
When I see them smiling, thats what makes me happy, said the patriarch of the six DeCiccos in Westchester County and one in both Rockland and Putnam counties.
The final changes to the store include an expanded cheese department where the bakery once stood plus beer growlers in a couple of weeks. Once those moves are finished, the store is hoping for a huge grand opening by Fathers Day Weekend, DeCicco said.
