Earlier this year, the district announced its intention to engage the community, encourage healthier lifestyles and prevent substance abuse by “promoting wellness and strengthening the support systems that deter drug consumption.”
As part of its third event of the year, Eastchester High School graduate Dante Giannini, who recently won Food Network’s competitive show “Chopped,” will demonstrate healthy cooking techniques during a live demonstration at Family Wellness Night at the Middle School this week.
Family Wellness night will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12 in the Middle School Cafeteria. It is open to all community members and families. Other activities on Thursday will include presentations from a yoga instructor and fitness coach. Eastchester Police D.A.R.E. officers will discuss the school’s drug prevention program and Trader Joe’s will provide healthy snacks.
Last year, former NBA player Chris Herren visited students to speak about how drugs and alcohol negatively affected him personally and professionally. Last month, internationally-renowned motivational speaker Michael Nerney spoke of “adolescent development and the allure of thrill-seeking, drug and alcohol abuse” and other high-risk behaviors that are prevalent among youth.
Next month, the district will host Susan Salomone and Ray Dorritie from “Drug Crisis in Our Backyard,” a community-oriented non-profit organization that helps families and individuals that struggle with addiction. Later this year, award-winning speaker Jermaine Galloway will visit the district to share his knowledge on teen alcohol and substance abuse. In April, the district will focus on prom weekend safety.
According to Schools Superintendent Walter Moran, “the district is strongly committed to a series of programs aimed at promoting substance abuse awareness and prevention strategies.”
